Denver Police Department Facebook A Denver Police Department traffic officer stops a driver.
Turns out speeding — especially on Broadway — isn’t such a new thing.
Denver residents have been grumbling about speeding tickets since 1886 when the Denver Police Department first started employing “Traffic Officers,” according to a DPD Facebook post.
Two officers on horseback began exclusively patrolling Broadway after someone’s speeding led to a three-carriage crash. The following year, a third officer was assigned to thoroughfares and a fourth to north Denver.
So next time you’re telling yourself, “I wasn’t going that fast,” just think of a person in 1886 saying the same thing.
